UCC Debate Society wins Public Speaking Competition in Togo

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) Debate Society has made its mark on the international stage by securing a resounding victory in the public speaking category of the 2023 Pan African Universities Debate Championship held in Togo.

The highly competitive championship brought together 31 universities from across Africa, vying for top honors in two categories: public speaking and debate. The Debate Society of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) emerged victorious in the debate category.

The UCC Debate Society’s outstanding achievement was revealed when their representatives, led by Haneef Mohammed Saani, presented the championship trophy to Prof. Eugene Kofour Maafo Darteh, the Dean of Students.

Mr. Saani briefed the Dean on the championship, stating, “The UCC Debate Society participated in the 2023 Pan African Universities Debate Championship held in Togo. After nine intense preliminary rounds of debate and four rounds of public speaking, three out of our four teams advanced to the pre-quarter finals, earning a perfect score from the judges.”

He further added, “The UCC ‘C’ team, comprised of Jonathan Agbetsoamedo and Nana Yaw Ofosu-Ababio, as well as the UCC ‘B’ team, consisting of Jackline Ballang and Godfred Nana Boakye, made it to the debate semifinals, and Christian Foli emerged as the winner of the Public Speaking contest.”

Clarifying the results, Mr. Saani explained, “Since the competition had two categories, the UCC Debate Society secured victory in the Public Speaking contest with an impressive score of 90.6 points, while KNUST emerged as the winners in the Debate competition.”
Expressing his gratitude on behalf of the university’s management, Prof. Darteh commended the students for their dedication and extensive preparations, which led to their success in the Public Speaking competition. He highlighted the pride the university felt when students achieved such remarkable feats.

Prof. Darteh expressed his hope that the UCC Debate Society would continue to excel in international competitions and bring further accolades to the university. He assured the students of his office’s unwavering support in their pursuit of excellence and the continued success of the UCC Debate Society.
